New York City has invested in some 900,000 gallons of renewable diesel ā€” made mostly from animal fat and vegetable oil instead of petroleum. The fuel will power 1,000 diesel vehicles for the next six months, including some garbage trucks.

The fuel gives off 60% less greenhouse gas emissions than regular diesel. The city is spending an extra $1.5 million on top of what it usually pays for diesel.
