New York City Public schools will begin using compostable cutlery this fall. New York has joined an alliance of cities including Chicago, Miami, and Los Angeles that will also be making the switch.

Each utensil “costs a fraction of a cent more” than plastic cutlery, but “the environmental benefits far outweigh the small extra cost,” the DOE said.
