A great horned owl died this week after becoming ensnared in discarded fishing line in Prospect Park. Now the birding community is calling for better enforcement of the park’s rules and regulations.

Park rangers tracked the owl for days after noticing it was snared by the line, but couldn’t capture it until its injury rendered it unable to fly. Unfortunately, the animal perished within hours of arriving at the rehabilitation facility.

In 2015, the Prospect Park Alliance installed special receptacles in which to discard fishing supplies and the Parks Department can charge anglers with fines for failing to comply with regulations.
